Spring Zoo Friend Membership Drive

Northern Trends, as many of you know, has been involved with helping to revitalize the Lake Superior Zoo.  Last year, Northern Trends replaced the leaky roof on the Griggs Learning Center and this spring, we will be working on an office conversion project. We are doing this because we believe that the zoo is important and we want to be sure that it stays open and available for children and families in our area.  We support the zoo and we think that you should too, by becoming a zoo member.

Spring is the best time to get your zoo membership and then receive free zoo admission for an entire year!  Log on to the zoo’s website: www.LSZoo.org and click on “Zoo Friend.”  You can purchase your membership on line (a family membership is only $55) and use Northern Trend’s customer code: NT09.  Zoo membership is a great value that lasts for an entire year!

Your kids and grandkids will love you for it - join today!

YES! NOW is the best time to invest in your Home

2Picking the right time to do a home improvement project can be difficult.

One of the most important factors to consider is getting the best return on your investment. With the considerable decline in the price of oil, the costs of many building products are falling.

Additionally, because there’s a decline in demand for building activities, we are also seeing some significant declines in labor pricing. This means that now, because our costs are lower, those savings can be passed on to you without sacrificing any of the excellence, craftsmanship and attention to detail that we are known for. This means that your investment has a higher return!

There’s also plenty other of financial incentives to act now. Tax credits, “go green” incentives, and, lower heating and cooling costs, are all good reasons for you to look into replacing windows and doors, updating your home’s heating and air conditioning systems, renovating outdated kitchens and bathrooms, or replacing damaged and unsightly roofs, siding, and landscaping.

Then there’s always the reward of pride and enjoyment in your home. Having any of the needs above addressed, or investing in a new painting, decking, or sunroom project will also bring you great pleasure and satisfaction on a daily basis as you enjoy the investment you’ve made in your family’s home.

The simple truth is that for wise home owners, this is a great time to get started with your project. You will get more value for your investment and your family will begin enjoying your home even more. Please be advised, timing is everything. There’s no way to know how long these lower construction costs will continue. Industry experts concur; costs are likely to rise considerably in the coming months.

            Remodeling and Re-using

Over the past 20 years we have remodeled many homes, but none have been as extensive as this house in Woodland.

We started last Fall with a standard 70's era split entry and began the deconstruction process. We were very interested in recycling as much as possible: all of the scrap wood from plywood, doors, and lumber went to Demolicious where it was shredded and used as biomass fuel for heating, the larger dimensional lumber was de-nailed and re-used in the new structure, most of the windows and doors and light fixtures were given away for re-use in cabins and hunting shacks, all of the house wiring was salvaged to be stripped of valuable copper and of course all of the copper plumbing pipes were recycled.

After all was said and done, we left the foundation and floor system in tact and only sent one 40-yard dumpster to the landfill.

Most homeowners would not have gone to this extreme to remodel a home but this homeowner was different- he loved his neighborhood and his trees and rather than move and start over he was able to create a new living space while preserving as much of the old as he could. Working on this project was a pleasure for all of us at Northern Trends.

GREEN TIP OF THE MONTH

Cleaner Soap

Consider switching from a petroleum based detergent to a vegetable based detergent. This helps reduce the amount of unnecessary chemicals released in to the ecosystem.

Q – I was considering buying my father the iRobot gutter cleaner. Right now he climbs up on a ladder and does the job by hand. Do you know if this gadget will make the job safer for my father?

- Penny Griffen

A – Penny, I’ve seen these things in action and I wish I could tell you that it would make this job safer for your father but the simple truth of the matter is that it will not.

I am a big fan of iRobots vacuums, but the gutter cleaner… not so much. It requires constant supervision and attention. It get’s stuck even in light debris and therefore requires several trips up and down the ladder.

I am of the opinion that no homeowner should be working on a ladder in this manner. Being in this business I can tell you that a single mistake can result in life long injuries or even worse. The best thing to do is to have the gutters replaced with a maintenance free product or have the existing gutters cleaned by a professional who has the daily experience working under those conditions.

You’re Ready for Summer – Is your Lawn?

2

Although it may not seem like it, summer is just around the corner! Along with all the vacation, summer camp and recreational planning you may be doing, be sure to keep your lawn in mind as well.

A lot of us come to the realization that our yards need some maintenance and prepping after it is too late and we’re already in the season. This year get in front of that task and do something while the time is right.

There are some basic things that need to be done to your grass to give it a healthy chance of looking good through the season:

Raking – You should have your yard raked thoroughly in the Fall and the Spring. This not only removes the leaves but also gets rid of the build up of clippings and waste that accumulates in the grass.

Fertilizing – Have fertilizer put down in the Spring. It really depends on your particular soil type, but usually a slow-release type is most appropriate. Also consider having your soil tested to make sure the right type of fertilizer is being applied.

Aerating – Over time, compacting of the lawn will cause air to be squeezed out of the soil. This makes for a poor root bed for new grass growth so it needs to be aerated to get the oxygen back in the soil. If you follow these rules as well as basic watering needs, you’ve got a good start to a fantastic looking yard!
